Video
I used to be a big collector. Specifically of live videos and tapes, usually done by fans either from TV or Radio or live at a gig. I still listen to some of those gigs but rarely do I watch my videos. I can't do anything when I watch a video. I must sit and watch and listen. It takes a lot of time. Music can go on in the background.
I went to watch some videos last night. One was an old interview with Regurgitator about their album cover for 'Unit', a big yellow dot (his yellow peril speach is very amusing). I also watched some live performaces from Recovery, an old Aus music live show.
I then went to watch the first official Regurgitator video which had videos for songs such as "Couldn't Do It" and "Track 1". I love this video. This video is my baby. I've only watched it three times. It's about four years old. It's fucked.
I've watched it three times, and it's been looked after very well since.. and now it's stuffed. The tracking on it is all stuffed. A friend suggested it may be magnitised. I was pissed.
This is why DVD will be good. DVD will be good. But this video won't be out on DVD, ever. I know it won't. But they stuffed DVD too. Regionalised zones? Stupid! You idiots!
Which gets me too CDs and MP3s...
I find myself having a huge urge to convert my old tapes to CD. This urge is slowly converting to MP3. I used to want to convert my tapes to CD so I could listen to them so the original wouldn't get stuffed. Then I wanted to use the CD as a good quality back up. Then I discovered CDs are just as falable as tapes in many ways.
So now I'm finding I want all this stuff on computer. In some sort of small format for ease of backing up and spreading around just in case I loose it. MP3.
Same deal with video.
I also find myself wanting every song from a band at one click. My current big urge is to transfer every Powderfinger song I have to MP3 and put in on a CD for my random listening pleasure. I want to do this because I have every Powderfinger song released. Because I can. I've done with with Faith No More...
But at what quality? But I remember a day when 96kbps in Xing compression was good. Suddenly I notice a lot of stuff at 196kbps variable bit rate. I guarentee you people won't put up with anything under 256k by the end of the year. Where does it end? WAVs? Yes.
