Second things second
I've been complaining about music a lot recently, but not actually mentioning any of it. I have been, over the last month or so, purchasing a lot of CDs as usual (RIAA must love me.. ARIA anyway).
Underworld - Underneith The Radar
Here's something to scare you. Remember that song 'Underneith The Radar'? No? Get it from Napster and check. Now.. you know 'King of Snake' right? They're both Underworld. Underworld's first album was 80's cheeze. Yum. Interesting enough the only real difference technically is that the 80's one uses guitar in nearly every song, where their 'dance' stuff doesn't. It's still electronic. He's still crazy with his voice. It's still fantastic noise/sample city. It's just 80's cheeze. Yum.
Timmy And The Lords of The Underworld - Timmy And The Lords Of The Underworld
While in San Francisco recently I found a single. South Park related, from the 'Timmy' episode. Someone must have noticed it's popularity on MP3.. or maybe this was always the plan. Anyhoo, it rocks and is well worth the money. Especially for the 'Livin' A Lie' B-side, the best 'nu metal' crossed with 80's metal rip off I've heard for a while. Go Trey and Matt!
Fight Club Soundtrack - Dust Brothers
Fight Club was one of a string of fantastic movies I saw last year. The script, the directing, the acting... and the soundtrack. Apon hearing this soundtrack and re-watching the movie you see just how darn incredible it is. I plan to track down some more Dust Brothers ASAP.
Bjork - Selmasongs
Music from 'Dancer In The Dark', this CD is so up itself it has it's own webpage and URL. Only 7 songs, and barely thirty-five minutes. It's a good 35mins though. Nothing head blowing but good. Every song except 'Overture' and 'New World' is heavily infused with industrial noises looped to Bjork's pleasure. All of them work perfectly. 'New World' is 'Overture' with worlds, and looping straight back into 'Overture' again is definitely the best way to hear the two together. My question is, just how long is this film and what isn't on this soundtrack that should be?
But they're not Australian!
No, they're not. Personally I've had a bit of trouble discovering good new Aussie music. Although.. I havn't really looked.
Fat Boy Slim
I'm going to go and see Fat Boy Slim at the end of October. I've never deliberately gone out to see a DJ so this should be interesting.
'Spleen Rupture', Hempel
Hempel's 'Spleen Rupture' caught my eye for obvious reasons. It's actually pretty darn decent dance, influenced by his metal side (although only really noticable by the dirty bass/guitar sample used throughout). A fairly long track but it changes frequently enough to remain interesting. Worth checking out if you're into it.
Approximate
I'll just wank my own chain for a bit here, but Approximate is soon to have a new track up, entitled 'Random' it is in a similar vein to 'Forgive' but with a much chunkier edge and a nice melodic ending.
It's also a good example of what is good and bad about my music. It was done in two takes. One for the main strummed guitar, one of the solo over the top. The strummed guitar was made up in three plays, the solo while it was recorded. This is good in that I think the song really works from such a small amount of effort... however very rarely does it go beyond that. I like it now so why put any more effort into it? Hence my songs remain badly produced little jams. The only one I've put effort into is 'The 60kph Ton', which everyone agrees is my best track out there.
Production skills are very hard to find.
