Update : Beat Magazine informs me it's the 16th of July, not the 20th. Thanks Beat.

Album didn't come out today so I did a quick search. Nothing on Warner Australia or the official site but a random CD shop quotes the 20th Of July. Argh! More waiting.

Pirate CDs are evil  #

Subject URL: Pirate CDs are evil

Clarification :
Dave questioned my issue with pirate CDs so I thought I'd clarify.

I make two assumptions when I buy a full price CD :

  1. That the artist will get some benefit from the purchase
  2. That the CD will be of exceptional quality

With a pirate CD I know the first assumption isn't happening. Some random mogal in some random place is making money from someone elses music and that pisses me off. Just as a site that offered free commercial unauthorised MP3 downloads for profit would piss me off (hey isn't that Napster?).

Dave made the point that the new pirate CDs in the market are of such good quality that the only way to tell the difference is by Serial Number. Assuming that they are exactly the same, who cares if it's a pirate. Apart from the assumption above, I don't really...

The only CD I've bought that I'm sure is a pirate is Queen's "Queen Rocks" compilation which has a pop in one of the songs. Maybe this isn't even a pirate, it's just a dodgy pressing. But I paid $10 for it so I'm not that stressed.

I just want to know that I'm getting the real thing when I'm paying $20-$30 for something. If I wanted pirate I'd download the MP3s or pay $5 for it.

But operations like this are a nice way to take on the music industry first hand as the artists rarely make much profit from CD sales, but the industry makes billions.

But music piracy can happen to indie artists too...

Original Post :
Pirate CDs are wrong and always will be. Free downloads OK, but making money and pretending to be official releases from a band is evil. And this isn't obvious piracy like the Best of AC/DC 10 album MP3 CDr you buy at computer fairs, where 99.9% of people know damn well what they're getting when they buy it. This is pretending to be the real thing. When I go in and buy the new Regurgitator album, I want it to be an official pressing non-dodgy good quality CD made in Australia. Not some bullshit thrown together in a factory in Indonesia (no offence to Indonesian factory workers).

Of course, It's been happening for years but the point made in the article is that now it's very hard to see any difference, except via the serial numbers. Looking for blury covers and spelling mistakes just won't do.
