Difference Of Opinion  #

An interesting idea was presented to me in a book I'm re-reading at the moment. The idea was mentioned in passing, as much of the ideas in this book are, but it stuck with me.

In the book ('Earth', David Brin) a net user typically subscribes to news services and opinion pieces. They 'filter the flow of information' to suit their desired reading. Of course, in this situation the user is likely to only read current world news and topics and opinions that suit their interestest and opinions. In many cases, the narative suggested, people get stuck in their little world, only reading opinions that match their own, never branching beyond that...

Think about the blogs you read. Are they all from people who's opinions match your own? At first thought they may be, this is what I thought of the blogs I read. But think again... do they really match your own exactly? Just think about it. I'm not saying you have to go and read the blog of a nutzoid gunhappy Nazi or anything but it's worth at least noticing you may be restricting your view on the world.

There is nothing worth than someone with a strong opinion who knows nothing of the otherside.

Just think how boring your music tastes would be if you never listened beyond that which you loved in Year 10, never giving other music a chance.
