HG Wells' War Of The Worlds was supposed to drop into the public domain in England last year. It was public domain in most places in the world (including the US), but in England the rights were privately owned by an artist who hoped to bring the book on the road as a stage show.
Alex Cox and Margaret Matheson hoped to turn the book into an animated movie along the lines of Chicken Run (although hopefully evil, and not funny)...
But following suit with the US, the British government added 15 years to artistic copyrights so the owner of the rights in England can sit on his idea for another eternity.
So those in England miss out on the opportunity to expand on HG Wells' work.
In this article Alex questions MPAA's claim that recent internet piracy has cost the makers of Spiderman millions, despite Spiderman being the most successful movie of all time. Alex questions the RIAA's claim they're losing millions through piracy when they've been making billions from constant format changes (vinyl, tape, 8 track, CD, DVD Audio).
We need to hear more stories like Alex's.
