Pesty Monkey...  #

Gig went well last night. I wasn't very energetic even for me but we played OK. Guitar might have been a bit loud. Wish we had time for real soundchecks. The monitor speakers are never set up right. Bit harsh to see half the people leave when we left the stage because the second band were pretty good. Should be photos soon if we can track down those that took them.

The way radio used to be. Playing unreleased Radiohead album, playing the good stuff twice. Being asked to please stop giving our band free advertising. (via Dave)

An analysis of the RIAA's complaint against Dan Peng '05. Dan Peng is being sued for running a service that indexes all of the Microsoft File-Shared files on his Uni's network. That's everything, not just MP3 or video. In fact, the service was running in a similar way before Dan Peng was even at the uni. If the RIAA wins this one they should be shot. Unless of course his website said something along the lines of "put your MP3s in your group accessable share and they'll be available to everyone in the uni via my website for free download!". Then well... still, he's done nothing technically wrong. You may as well sue Google or the millions of FTP indexers out there.

Update : Even better link on the case above, with pictures explaining the technology and lots of related links (via Slashdot). Update on my comments, you may as well sue Microsoft.

Info on all the different types of CD copy protection. Via VM or acb. I can't remember... I've been busy.

EMI pull their online forum for discussions on their copy-control discs.

Old news but I'd have built ten of these sites for $50k a year if you let me do it from home. $4 million!!!? For a poxy website with a content management backend. To an overseas company no less. And people wonder why the Australia IT industry is "in a spot of trouble".

Parents of my girlfriend just returned from Sri Lanka after attending (one of) their (other) daughter's wedding. They say: It's very hot. It's very humid. There are cars (vehicles) everywhere. There is rubbish everywhere. They burn tyres everywhere to keep away the mozzies. It's extremely poluted. The roads are terrible. There are wild dogs everywhere. Occationally there are lots of monkeys but they're filthy little bastards. The kids are the best behaved kids they've ever seen. Everyone was really nice. The history (and sites) is/are interesting but veiled by the heat... It's not sounding too fun to visit. But maybe that's the point...

Another time of year maybe when it's less hot and a bit windy. Probably shouldn't take their word for it... But it's under a lot of other places on the list of "if I was rich" visits. Drive around Australia first...

New set of business cards last Friday. I've received hundreds of these little rectangles of cardboard and given out maybe twenty... Wish I'd gotten an MP3.com.au one instead of a bloody Sprint.com.au one.

Finished guitar off for another song last night. Might need some fills still but that's two sets of guitar in the can. This one is actually fairly listenable as-is. The reference bass/vocal takes are OK. Six to go. Then another eight. Sigh. Have done really rough mixes of four more too.
