Just two days ago I was thinking about how was it possible that 810Mb of VCD data (or audio data) fits on a 700Mb CD. Obviously it's the way it writes the data is different... or the fact it's not burning a FAT table and writing bit for bit. Blah. I'd look it up if I cared.

Anyway... now they have technology which will let you write 1.4Gb on a normal CDr [Slashdot]. To read it you'll need to firmware upgrade your DVD player. Another new tech lets you write 1Gb to a normal CDr which can be read by a normal CD-ROM. Anyone having 700k vs. 1.4Mb 3.5" disc flashbacks? Maybe this works by punching an extra hole in the CD? ;p

iTunes sells 275,000 tracks in first 18 hours. [Billboard.com via Slashdot] How does this compare to MusicNet and Liquid.com and all those other digital sales places of doom? Estimates say this is about $100k for Apple.
