Lossless audio 2  #

Installed FLAC lossless audio last night and compared it to SHN (see previous news item for links). A SHN of a 22Meg WAV of the band jamming went down to about 17 Meg. The FLAC was 18 Meg. Not much of a test with one file... but I believe the main reason for a push to use FLAC vs. SHN is that FLAC will compress 24/96 WAV files (DVD audio quality) while SHN can "only" do CD (44.1) and DAT (48) quality. Seems like most traders via etree.org use SHN.

Note when installing mkw ACT (SHN encoder/decoder) from etree.org on Windows XP. You must tell XP to run the software under compatibility mode "Windows 2000" else it doesn't work.

Thinking of buying the Sony ECMMS907 stereo microphone ($170 at JB-Hifi) again. My last one melted because I left the batteries in (it's very very easy to leave this microphone on).

Anyone know of a minidisc player with a digital out (not a digital in) for much less than $900? No, the Sony NetMDs only transfer into the MD, they do not transfer out.

I have too much software on my computer.

Breath a sigh of relief leeches. Do not encourage your kids to share. Only take. Sharing is BAD. RIAA going after the biggest sharers of music on P2P with lawsuits.

Triple J starts putting up MP3s of the latest round of Victorian Unearthed. No Walken track though. Most likely because we didn't enter anything into the "MP3 link" box when registering. We're thinking of putting the demo on our site soon anyway.
