OK, 34 Meg ZIP file with 10 128kbps MP3s in it. Compression doesn't sound fantastic but the concept is sold on me. More bands should sell their CDs online this way. The price is excellent. $5 Aus. Would have prefered VBR MP3s better quality.
Make that $4.47.
Lame attempt of the month: to blog a photo at least once a week...
Lame self search of the month: Found Approximate on MP3.com again. They have a play counter now. 26 plays in three years. I still like the song three years later. That means a lot to a musician.
Band that rules of the month: REM have officially endorsed sharing of live and rare versions of their music via murmurs.com since 2001. They have a WinMX client for doing just that. It's made me decide to get WinMX and throw Kaaza away. Does WinMX have spyware? (see an article about REM's rockingness and various other sharing related stuff at Billboard what I saw linked from boingboing) Ween are planning on doing a similar thing. Looking forward to the new Ween album, White Pepper is really good.
Here is how to get onto the REM Give It Away service. Uses the standard WinMX ap.
CV.org has a list of people trading similar stuff for Faith No More "and related" bands using Soulseek, software I've never managed to get the hang of but plan to one day. But then cv.org has a nice FTP server too.
Why is Nick happy to see pirate Invader Zim sold on EBay? Because they'll never release themselves... bastards.
Why can't I <strike> here in weblog land damn it.
Aussie DJ arrested for creating (and distributing via CD + internet) DJ mixes. Reading into the article it's more his association with recently busted Mp3WmaLand than the DJ-set itself but it's a scary trend. Sites like Tranzfusion.net (who pay a monthly fee to APRA I believe) must be freaking. Nice article full of lots of choise quotes like how the only way to stop piracy is to sell commercial CDs at $5, and if 50 Cent was Australian he'd have been arrested for music piracy. [via acb]
True, some DJs crossed a line when they began selling their mix-CDs to shops. But Gunz says the record companies created a void by failing to put out decent mix-CDs themselves. Indeed, he and several other DJs had tried to sign a legitimate deal with one of the companies now suing them but were unable to agree on the song selection. "Their problem is that they don't understand the music," he says. "They don't know the difference between what's good and what's not."
The only reason I did this update was to play with the Australian Weblog tracker at Aussie Blogs.
What the hell? James Iha (the not-Billy guitarist from Smashing Pumpkins) is to join A Perfect Circle (the not-Tool band). That's weird. Band's are getting unusually interbred lately. [via Silent Uproar]
VAST are selling 10 demos to their next album for US$2.99. This is exactly the sort of thing fans are willing to pay for and hit the Kaaza's of this world for (leaked demos, bootlegs etc.). Fantastic for the band to be releasing them themselves. I might buy this to see what it's like (both the music and the process). [via Silent Uproar]
I wonder where my replacement Back To The Future II and III DVDs are? I sent off to Universal over a month ago. Might be time for an email / phonecall / letter. I hate the way these companies have no contactable public face...
Metallica coming to Australia to play the Music Bowl + Big Day Out. Oh dear.
Cry.
