Dogs Breakfast  #

Played with Dogs Breakfast in St Kilda on Saturday and I hung around to watch their set. I'll comment in rapid thought form...

Used to be a cover band? Half originals half covers. Powderfinger's On My Mind, Violent Femmes' Blister In The Sun, nice different version of Australian Crawl's Reckless. Halfway through first song I bet Heath they'd do a Hoodoo Gurus cover. Found out later they were going to be a Hoodoo Gurus cover band (but I guess they gave up that idea when Hoodoos reformed). Singers voice is almost identical to Hoodoo Gurus lead singer. Tight. Very good if sometimes clichedly used solo guitarist (Olaf). Really good equipment (wireless!). Drummer sometimes a bit loose on the drumrolls but otherwise good. Worked the crowd (what little of a crowd there was) well. All really nice guys.

I wasn't too happy with the mixing on their EP. Vocals too loud. Recorded at Hothouse, same place as our single. Photo on the cover is down the hall at HotHouse (St Kilda). Apparently they're getting lots of airplay on SYN FM.

They were good, and certainly played really well, but I didn't love 'em. I did really like their single though, "Get Set Get Real". Catchier than a catchy thing on catchy day. I'd see them again.

The Hobbit  #

Duh. Newline looking at making The Hobbit. Not surprising that Tolkien estate is holding out. If I owned the rights to The Hobbit I'd be wanting a lardload of money out of a movie. Percentage of gross takings thank you very much. Jackson is busy making King Kong until 2006.

I always thought The Hobbit would have made a better movie.
