stormy weather  #

Some amazing lightning photos sent in by readers of The Age. Reading the paper today looks like the storm was a lot worse than I thought. A lot of flooded houses and businesses. Lots of people stuck in flooded cars (including a few on the Eastern Freeway on which I frequently drive). Some more photos [The Age]. My office was flooded (9th floor of a 55 floor building), not sure how the water got in. I'm starting to think maybe our house did get hailed on but I just slept through it. The car seems ok. Didn't notice any dinted cars at the train station.

Train travels from Tsuru and Otsuki (same distance as Tokyo and Osaka) in 1 hour @ 581 kph with real passengers on board, deliberately... unlike Melbourne's crazy runaway Broadmeadows trains [via Slashdot]. (Thanks for the city name updates Dave, I got excited and stuffed up)

Walken @ Revolver  #

Gig last night @ Revolver Upstairs was great... except no-one was there to see it. A few regulars were there and we thank them muchly, but Wednesday night really isn't go-to-see-Walken-gig night it seems. After paying the mixer (who was excellent) we made pretty much nothing. Revolver provide a damn nice rider though.

Meebar were fantastic. Love that band. Really good mix. Around 30/40 people turned up for Modern Physician who put on an energetic show but I couldn't really get into them. Their soundcheck earlier on was better mixed (and played), and I was stuck up the back in the crap sound with my gear until they finished. The crowd loved them though. Late night. Tired.

Gigapixel images  #

(moved this post from yesterday to it's own posting)

One very beautiful 1.09 gigapixel image, made up of 196 6-megapixel images. Lots of nice detail comparison photos between 3 megapixel cameras to a US$25,000+ 140 megapixel camera [via slashdot].

Given that the resolving power of the human eye (under ideal conditions at the center of the retina) is about 1 arcminute (1/60th of one degree), this image captures considerably more detail than I (or any other normal sighted human) was able to see with my eye when standing on the overlook at Bryce Point. Assuming one pixel per arcminute, an image with dimensions of 3780 x 2485 would suffice to capture the amount of detail that the naked eye could resolve. This image has more than 100 times this detail. Looking at the full sized digital image, one is able to see things that might have been difficult or impossible to spot, even when using binoculars

Cool. When can I get a version of this to strap to my face.
