Tori Amos resources  #
Thursday, 11 Dec 2003 02:12PM
Been tracking down info on Tori Amos after thoroughly enjoying her recent best-of-and-more CD "Tales of a Librarian" (possibly more on that later).

I share what I found with you now. Thankfully Tori has a ton of fans who frequently keep their websites up to date (as in within the last week, not within the last year). May these links bring you much joy.

Tori Amos Setlist Database
Tori Amos Bootleg Discography

Both of these are extremely useful in conjunction with:

The Force Of Tori Amos (including ftp.tal.org)

And fan sites including audio / discographies / lyrics / photos / reviews and all that stuff:

Here In My Head
The Dent

rec.music.tori-amos [Google Groups]

And not Tori related, but collecting music related:

Lists of every Triple J Live At The Wireless including setlists / locations / recording date in most cases.

The biggest problem with any website is the slowless and clumsiness of accepting user corrections + new information. The Live At The Wireless site is a few months out of date, and I'm sure there are people out there more than willing to fill in the gaps but are too lazy to email, or the runner of the site is too busy to update.

Is there a better way of keeping this info up to date or is the lack of trust amongst humans too strong to allow anymore than a few people to update a page?

Thought of the day: Random number generators  #
Thursday, 11 Dec 2003 02:06PM
With a truely random number generator it would be impossible to predict the number that will be returned. Even if you knew how it worked (seeded with the current date and the amount of memory used? seeded with static noise?)

So random that if you were to run two identical random generators at the exact same time they'd come up with a different number.

So random that if you were to go back in time and watch it pick the number again, it would be different...

Robbie Williams vs. Pre_Shrunk vs. Fantomas  #
Thursday, 11 Dec 2003 02:04PM
What is with Pre_Shrunk and Fantomas? Back in 2000 I missed a Fantomas gig to see Pre_Shrunk (same night). I notice an ad for Pre_Shrunk (supporting Brown Hornet) @ The Corner Hotel and think I might go but NO it's on Friday night, same night as Fantomas (+ Melvins + Tomahawk). I think someone in Pre_Shrunk hates Mike Patton...

Sounds like Robbie Williams was good last night [The Age]. Photos [The Age]. The first musical act to ever sell out Telstra Dome. Review from Alex indicates the show was very similar to the Knebworth DVD with a few minor changes.

MPEG-4 / DIVx standalone player hits Oz  #
Thursday, 11 Dec 2003 02:04PM
Strathfield (local car / electronics store) has a stand alone MPEG4/DVD player on sale for $188. Yes, a DVD player that plays DivX/MP3/DVD in Australia for under $200. No word on whether it's flash upgradable. The DivX format frequently upgrades. I have no information a name except "XMS". Meanwhile... LiteOn DVD+/-R internal drives are $248.

Blocked Nose  #

Both of my places of work block any URL with ".MP3" from being accessed. The assumption behind this blockage really gets up my nose. Particularly given Real Media (RM) and Windows Media (ASF / WMA etc.) are not blocked. It's not the "large" file defence... It's the assumption of piracy. MP3 is regularly used to publish presentations / interviews from the technical world. I'm willing to admit that MP3 on the web is probably more often used for piracy, but .JPG and .HTML are definitely used more for displaying porn. Let's block them.
