Spy Kids 3D  #

I'd love to review Spy Kids 3D for you but I only really saw a third of it. The 3D elements of the film, those that required the red/blue glasses didn't work for me.

My right eye is lazy, and usually in life I get by with the left eye taking up most of the slack and the right only showing what the left eye cannot. That is, I almost never see in 3D. If I deliberately look through both eyes I get two images, double vision. I've learnt to turn off what my right eye is telling me because otherwise I'd be very confused. We attempted to fix this when I was small with a patch over my left (non-lazy) eye, but I couldn't see very well at all out of just my right eye and I kept peaking. When looking out of just my right eye everything is shrowed in black, my brain is still looking out of the left closed eye.

Anyway, back to the movie. I'm sure I used to be able to see red/green 3D movies but I certainly can't now. And I just tried some online 3D red/green images that I know I used to be able to see when a kid, but not now. IMAX 3D (which uses different technology) works fine, but for the parts with the glasses on for Spy Kids 3D everything was red (left eye) with little flecks of green/blue (right eye) every now and then. I'd often see two images but they were far apart. I eventually took the glasses off for parts of the film.

Needless to say it was hard to concentrate and enjoy a film I could barely watch. The story was ok, but the jokes were pretty damn bad, even for a Spy Kids film. I'm sure the grandpa didn't have an accent in the last film. It all felt like a bit of a gimicky add-on to Spy Kids 2, let's bring in all the old characters from the last movie for no apparent reason. Although that fit in pretty well with the computer game feel of the movie.

So I can't really be relied on to tell you if it was any good or not. If you're eyes aren't lazy, tell me what you thought. Otherwise I'll have to wait to see it at IMax (will never happen) or I'll just watch the non-3D version on DVD. Bummer.

haha, here is an article on just this subject, "Why some people can't see Spy Kids 3D".

Hmmm. the fact I used to be able to see the 3D flat images and can't now means it's probably time to head back to the eye dude.

Professional lego builder [via Slashdot]. I suppose it's guys like this who's fault it is that most lego for kids these days is made of two premoulded pieces you slap together. Also the Star Wars Lego Battle Droids are excellent...
