ZoneAlarm 5 vs localhost  #
Sunday, 06 Jun 2004 03:08PM
Have just wasted an hour trying to get my localhost server up and running again, only to discover the problem is caused by ZoneAlarm 5 (I've just upgraded).

Anyone who used to be able to run localhost IIS apps (localhost) and is running ZoneAlarm 5 should downgrade (complete uninstall, then reinstall) to Zone Alarm 4.5 until futher notice.

More of this: MagazineArt archives scans of the covers of old (19th/early 20th century) magazines. The science/tech related ones rock. [via BoingBoing]

Less of this: New York City is planning on banning photography in the subway. Apparently most cops already think it's illegal [via BoingBoing]. Photography has "recently" been banned in the subway in Melbourne, but I've often heard the voiceover robots scream at people who take photos.

And with everyone trying to prevent you from copying stuff, maybe it's time we started hiding our recordings on the lids of noodles. This device (original article in Japanese, linking to BoingBoing) allows you to record audio using the same technology as vinyl records onto pretty much anything flat and round (including CDs!).

Hands off my music, it wouldn't work anyway  #

I'm having a surf morning it seems while stuff compresses/burns/downloads in the background. Bittorrent is hammering the bandwidth so I'm reading news.

RIAA is wasting money on research for iPod like devices that will allow DRM encoded tracks to be linked only to your fingerprints [The Register] so that only the person who owned it can play it. Neatly kills off any chance of copying or even playing the tracks to your friends. Neatly kills off the entire music industry too. If tracks were maybe... less than a cent... I'd find this almost acceptable.
