Looking further into David Brin I have the feeling I'll be digging up The Practice Effect and his most recent Kiln People soon.

I'll admit to enjoying The Postman, I have no intention of seeing the movie. I remember thinking the Uplift series (a(not)ka. Horny Dolphins and Crazy Monkeys) was OK but not great.

I'm willing to take the punt on a few more of his books, but I can't help but feel Earth is his best.

Here are some books I've enjoyed (with spoiler filled Wikipedia links for your enjoyment):

If you have no problem reading comics (you shouldn't), dig up some of these collections:

Yes, I like Grant Morrison. He'll go a long way to helping you feel even stupider than you already feel.

I'll also admit there are hundreds of other books I think you should read however I can't think of them right now. Start with Earth and Vurt and if you hate them, stop there. Don't read Jimmy Corrian anywhere near sharp objects or swallowables.
