Chris Ware: Where to start?  #

Some good advice on where to start with Chris Ware. The first comment (from "beaucoupkevin") is essentially the advice I would give...

  1. Get Jimmy Corrigan.
  2. Get the giant red ACME book (which really is lovely).
  3. Get Quimby The Mouse.
  4. Then get #16 and 17.

I've yet to get/read ACME #17. ACME #16 is the beginning of the story of Rusty Brown the socially retarded superhero figurine collector, previously referred to only in single page comics throughout the ACME series. The art, as usual, is fantastic, but the story failed to grab me the way Jimmy Corrigan did. To be fair it has only just started.

I'd also add that Ware's contribution to McSweeney's #13 is excellent and didn't appear in the "big red ACME collection".

Strict liability removed from new copyright laws  #

Some significant changes to the new Australian copyright laws are discussed at LawFont.

It looks as if most of the "strict liability" clauses have been removed, making it much harder to randomly fine people for taping their favourite TV show.

Also added is the ability to forfeit illegal copies and the devices made to create them instead of paying a fine. Paving the way for lots of police auctions of computer gear... I wonder if this means that if you pay the fine you can keep the illegal copies? Surely they'd be confiscated regardless?

At the end of all of this law morphing I'd love to see a list of questions and answers describing various common activities to see how they're effected by the new laws.

LawFont also linked to IPKat discussing the released Gowers Review of intellectual property law in the United Kingdom. As heavily leaked it does not propose an extension of the 50 year copyright on sound recordings. The report is just that, a report. There is nothing stopping law makers from extending the copyright anyway.
