Peeping Tom @ The Forum 22nd June 2007  #

The Forum is always way bigger in my head, it looks so small when you walk in and it's almost empty. Filled up pretty quickly.

The support appeared to be Umlaut (the band with Bär McKinnon who I saw supporting Secret Chiefs 3 @ The Corner). They sounded Umlauty and I'm sure that was Bar on keyboards, but I didn't recognise any of the songs from The Corner gig. They sounded better. Maybe it was the mix. The idea of the same band supporting Patton and Trey was too awesome to not be true...

PT came on around 10:15 to a packed venue. We were up the back of the mosh on a little raised step so our view was brilliant. It looked like the same band as was on Henry Rollins Show but I couldn't say for sure about the DJ or keyboardist. Definitely same violin and beatbox (Butterscotch) and Dub Trio [Patton changes the line up of Peeping Tom depending on availability].

The sound was a little distant, like they were all singing over a backing tape. It seemed such a pity to have that many people on stage and have it sound like a tape. Luckily they threw in a few improvs here and there to remind you it was live. And Dub Trio got a little 10/15 minute set of their own in the middle.

Patton said "Melbourne" a lot in lyric changes, mentioned Chopper and crack again, attempted to get the front row to spit in his mouth, mouthed off at a few people in the front. Old school Patton charm.

What I really enjoyed was seeing Patton being a front man again. In Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk he's stuck behind a mountain of gear and the guy can't move. In PT he's back in Faith No More mode and it is brilliant. Whatever you say about the music it's awesome to see him throw himself around a bit again.

Two encores, about 100 minutes of music. Letting the DJ, beatboxer and Dub Trio have their own little sets really extends the gig. No surprises in the setlist from other shows I've read about. Perhaps tonight...

Bring on the smoking bans. It's like everyone's trying to get as many puffs in as they can before they're not allowed any more. I'll be very surprised if it's enforced to any sort of useful level though.
