We want a wide screen TV. We watch a lot of movies and a lot of TV these days is wide screen so we've been looking.

First things we've noticed:

  • LCD and Plasma look worse than a decent CRT and cost at least twice as much at the sizes we're looking at...
  • ... although a crap LCD can cost as much as an expensive CRT of similar sizes.
  • We're happy with the 4:3 size of our 51cm TV (30cm high, so maybe a little bigger would be nice), we just want it wide, so we only need around a 62cm (diagonal) widescreen TV to suit. We'd like a little bigger so 68cm+ would be good.
  • Given the placement of our TV and our couch and the lack of other suitable placements we can't actually have a TV any bigger than 80cms or we'd be too close to it.
  • So anything between 68cm and 80cm is the go.

We don't need anything magic. Child locks or teletext or any other crap. We want big box what shows pictures. We don't want integrated digital tuners. We're perfectly happy to buy our own set top box so it can be upgraded.

LG have a great looking "slim" CRT out at the moment, 76cm widescreen for $800. Thing is... we think spending more than $500 on a TV is criminal. Like spending $60 on a CD or $1000 on a friggin mobile phone.

We've set ourselves a limit of around $400 at the most.

Although the LG really is the best we've been able to find. We saw a 68cm widescreen TV at Target the other day for $160. It looked great. It was ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE and wouldn't fit in the car so we didn't buy it, but it was tempting. Something MUST have been wrong with it...

Not that we actually NEED a new TV. Not at all. Nope nope.
