Eureka  #

We spent Saturday in the city, looking at jewellery stores and rings. I've picked my wedding ring, although I haven't ordered it yet. Commitment issues. Haha.

Katie has found two that she loves, but can't choose between them. I told her not to stress, she only has to wear it forever.

We had lunch at Transport and had a pot each of Graystons Reserve 2007 (Matilda Bay). Highly recommended.

And lastly, we finally made it to the Eureka Observation Deck. It's surprisingly small (compared to the Rialto). The LED displays embedded in the floor are disorienting but informative. The majority of the windows are coated in a UV blocking material that increases the reflections from inside. There are a few spots without it, but even they badly reflect.

The outside observation area wasn't the least bit frightening. Outside up the Rialto in the wind I always get horrible vertigo, but not at Eureka. I think the ceiling helped. The "Edge" ride looked rubbish and about a scary as falling off the bottom rung of a ladder, but it was fun to watch from the outside.

I took a lot of photos, but it was hard to tell if the reflections were coming through. The view is absolutely stunning and you get a real impression of how high up you are. All 50ish floors of the BHP building at Melbourne Central looked tiny and short.

We thought about iMax and Beowulf but heyfever made that impossible.

As it turned out, heyfever had be knocked out a good part of Sunday. I'm looking into a different pills.

Sunday night saw me celebrating Heath's 29th at the Rooftop Cinema, top floor of Curtain House. Fake plastic grass (with fake plastic dirt!) was great, as was the beer, although I drank too much of it. I skipped dinner and went home to nurse my head.

Nelson backs gay reforms  #

Nelson backs gay reforms [The Age]:
New Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson has backed equality of economic treatment for homosexual couples, ramping up pressure on Labor to carry through on promises to remove discrimination.

[...]

Dr Nelson said he believed very strongly that the economic and social injustices faced by homosexual people needed to be addressed, including taxation, social security and superannuation.

[...]

But he rejected going further, declaring marriage as only between a man and a woman.

"It is the foundation of our society. I do not support gay marriage. I do not support gay adoption. I do not support gay IVF," he said.

Although I don't agree with his opinions on marriage and children, I admire his honesty. It would have taken a cattle prod to get Howard to say anything so solid and unambiguous.

So, when will Labor make it so?
