Examples of good use of digital technology  #

How digital music/video could be used for good instead of evil...

Buying a real world CD online:

  • Order CD
  • Download to MP3 provided so I can listen immediately
  • Real world CD arrives in mail

Same goes for DVD movies.

Issues?

  • People can't change their mind. Once you're given a link you have the product... can't take it back... can't make them delete it.
  • A TV show could be $40 but be 5 DVDs. That's a lot of data. Data transfer isn't free.

Or... here is what I'd absolutely LOVE to be able to do...

TV show subscription:

  • I already know I love Dexter, so I pre-buy the DVD boxset for Season 3 ($50? $60?)
  • When it screens on TV, I'm provided a link to a DivX so I can watch it at my convenience
  • When the whole show has been broadcast they work on the DVD boxset. When it's finished they send me a copy.

This means they don't get any TV channel licensing money though... or at least, not from me.

I'd also like to be able to subscribe to bands... but that's another post...
