According to [mastering engineer Ian Sheperd's] analysis, which looks solid, audiophiles would be better off recording the songs from the videogame than buying the album because the Guitar Hero version has far more dynamic range than the hyper-compressed CD version.
Weezer's latest album suffered from almost all the problems Death Magnetic does. Blame Rick Rubin I suppose.
There is a lot of movement on this. I wouldn't be surprised if a re-mix did happen. I would be even less surprised to see Guitar Hero rips of the album if you were to search for them (which I obviously don't condone).
Rollingstone bravely described All Nightmare Long (my fav. track on the album): "Combining the riffs of their Eighties classics with the hooks of their Nineties hits, it may be the perfect Metallica song.".
Metallica pulled out of an interview because the interviewer reviewed a fan-cut/remix of the album and told people where to download it.
I remember thinking a fan remix of St. Anger was needed, but never bothered looking for one, as I was sure even that wouldn't help.
I'm not surprised there is already one for Death Magnetic. I question how good it can be with only a day or so of work, although I was sitting there listening to Death Magnetic going "that bit could go" and "that bit can stay". Maybe it's not so hard. Certainly a remaster is needed. DM has far more material worth working with than St. Anger.
I look forward to the new Metallica album where they release a DVD of all the in studio riffs and jams and fans put the album they want together from the pieces.
Metallica, the George Lucas of music.
