The gig has sold out.
We enter the venue in time to see most of the support, Ouch My Face, a three piece with a fantastic, chunky, rhythm section. Really meaty bass. Front woman screams with passion, riffing away on the guitar. Most of us agree they sound a little L7, but angrier. I'm not convinced their sound will work on CD but I buy their EP ($10) anyway.
I had hoped for some new Regurgitator/Ben/Quan/Pete CD to buy but there is nothing new on sale.
Not that long after Ouch leave the stage, Regurgitator follow.
They're a three-piece tonight, no keyboards. Pete is back on drums. Quan still looks odd without his glasses, and even odder with his new longer, curly hair. Ben and Pete could have travelled in time from a decade ago.
They start off a bit rough, and remain that way for the whole gig. Pete plays a bit fast when he isn't following a click track, Quan often misses guitar riffs in his excitement, and at times they get a bit lost.
Overall though, it's a pile of fun, as usual. The setlist is a mix of old and new, all albums and almost all EPs represented. A couple of new tracks (Distractions and Miranda July) are showcased (both pretty good).
One amusing moment at the usual "end of gig" point, the band had no backstage area to go to, so they talked to each other awkwardly for a bit, then stayed on stage for the "encore", playing a "90s metal jam", "Song Formerly Known As" then finishing on "Kong Foo Sing".
It seemed to finish quickly, but for $20 on a Sunday night, it is hard to complain.
Fun, but one of the least fun Regurgitator gigs I've seen.
