2011 album purchases  #

I've ignored CDs I got for free (either as gifts or on the front of magazines). I've ignored all albums I got as part of multi disc box sets, and as usual I've ignored Best-ofs, compilations, soundtracks, EPs and Singles. Albums. Only. That cuts out a good 50% of the CDs I gained in 2011, however a great many of those were second hand front-of-magazine CDs and hardly count.

11% of the albums I bought in 2011 were albums I already had, re-purchased for various reasons (remasters, special editions, collectors editions).

7% of the albums I bought were digital, either through iTunes or through Bandcamp. I bought digital only when there was no physical option, or the digital option was significantly cheaper than the physical option.

21% of the albums I bought were second-hand and 73% new (with digital making up the rest). When buying second-hand I tend to buy when rare, or more usually, when cheap. As such, the average price of second-hand albums was just $5.83.

The average price of new albums I bought was $15.97. Note that the price includes any postage.

Of the new albums released in 2011, bought in Australian stores, the price was always $20. This seems to be the new "new album" price. A few were around the $25 mark, but these were special editions with extras.

Of the new albums released in 2011, bought overseas, the price was between $14 and $18, including postage.

It seems I still buy most of my CDs from a physical store, and mostly new. I also admit these days that digital isn't as repulsive as I've previously thought, but I still feel like a moron buying digital if the physical product is cheaper.
