Magazines  #

A year ago I blogged about my subscriptions to Metal Hammer and Classic Rock magazines. Both are UK magazines that usually include a cover CD, one of the main reasons I get them.

I still have four of those MOJO magazines I mentioned back then to read. The CDs were generally great. I found a heap of great songs, and a few leads into bands from those CDs. A worthy purchase. The majority of the MOJO CD reviews though were useless to me so I usually skip that section now.

Metal Hammer has since reformatted itself and is now a lot more readable, must less childish. I'm finding myself more interested in mini-mag in the back pages where the blacker/darker side of metal is discussed. Metal is getting so pop these days.

I think I've come to the conclusion I don't actually generally like the kind of music Classic Rock likes. I tend to like the more rock/blues leaning stuff, but pure "classic rock" is too samey to me. The cover CDs of the magazines "greatest music of the year" are usually unlisenable to me, except for the rare track here or there.

Although, the same can usually be said for Metal Hammer.

I'm also finding having the magazine delivered from half way around the world occasionally causes issues. I've had one Metal Hammer not turn up, and they got my subscription confused at one point and started sending me magazines without the cover CDs.

Sorted now... but I find I wish I had access to the digital version as part of my subscription. I prefer the paper version, I'm happy to pay more to have it delivered, but still, to me they're one and the same. I'm slightly put out that they're treated as different subscriptions.

They briefly bring up the idea of purely digital cover CDs every now and then and everyone goes crazy (as do I) so I can't see them going anywhere any time soon. But even then, I wish they came with a download option too.

Walken - 1 year on  #

A year ago I was working on getting my old band's CDs for sale, plus various other internet related magic.

We eventually went with Bandcamp where both our old CDs are now for sale.

The best deal (for those in Australia) is to buy Current Melbourne Temperature on physical CD for $5. Not only will we post it to your for free, we'll include the "Glory (Misunderstood)" single for nothing. Postage overseas is $3.50.

When you take into account the cost of postage, we're giving the CDs away for free.

And yet, we've still sold zero in a year. Everyone who wants this CD already has it.

Oh well. No tears.

I've been meaning to post about the general economics of being in an original-music-non-cover band, at least when I was, back in 2000-2004, but haven't got around to it. It isn't pleasant reading.

One day.

Meanwhile I'm happy to have set up Walken's Facebook page. Uploading ever photo I could find of the band has been fun. Putting up every piece of music we thought worthy, plus a lot that isn't, on our website was fun too, as was putting videos on YouTube.

Every now and then I get vaguely enthused about compiling a video of our early years, but that stuff is hard to listen to. The 10 year anniversary of the first gig from our final line up is coming up. I might do something to celebrate that...
