Leave late (about lunch) and take EastLink to whole way to Mornington, turning right at the roundabout instead of left to Tyabb and antiques.
Arrive at Mornington Bed and Breakfast at 1.30pm and call the owner to come and check us in. The venue is fantastic, as is the owner. We're staying in the Arbour room. It's small (a little bigger than our bedroom at home) but gorgeously decorated with red carpet and antiques. Marie Antoinette images are placed randomly. Terry's Twilight chocolate on the bedside table. Coffee/Tea/Biscuits are refilled daily.
We walk to town, then up and down Main Street. We see God's Kitchen on the way, a church converted into a restaurant. Great image of budda with a halo and angel wings holding a glass of wine and a baguette.
We have a pot of Red Hill Golden Ale on tap at the Bay Hotel then walk to the point. Nice view of the city through the distant rain. Windy. We glance slightly at the Matthew Finders memorial. Back to the pub for a James Squire Amber Ale (bottle).
Around 6pm we go to God's Kitchen for dinner. We're tempted by the all-you-eat pizza for $15 but there aren't enough people so we order some Goyza to share then a pizza each. Their pizza's are fantastic. Duck/Cashew/Ginger. We drink Little Creatures.
Walk back to the B&B a little tipsy and drink tea while watching TV.
Friday 17 April 2009
Up at 8.30 for breakfast, as ordered the night before with the help of our host. Bacon, Eggs, Mushrooms, French Toast, Coffee, OJ.
Drive to the point again, less windy today.
"Big Shed" Antiques at Mornington until 2pm. I buy two panoramic photos of Melbourne (both from the 90s) and a book.
Drive to Packing House at Tyabb for lunch. After lunch I look at Melbourne/Victoria books while Katie looks at the rest of the place. I don't find anything.
Check out the outside antique places (Grain Store and Hay Shed) then drive to Tyabb (second away) to look at an antique store there, then we have an ice cream.
Drive to Hastings, Stoney Point (where the train ends) then on to Arthur's Seat via the slightly-exciting-with-the-sun-in-your-eyes road to Dromana. Take a few photos then drive down the hill, stopping at the lookouts on the way down (except the one with the car with the steamy windows) then back to the B&B to drop off our purchased antiques.
Walk to Main Street hoping to eat at the local Japanese place (Kazu, down an alley way off Main Street) but it's booked out.
Although the streets are empty, all of the eating venues are packed. Highly recommend booking for dinner Friday/Saturday night.
We walk instead to a Thai place we saw while wandering and they have room. We eat curry and drink dodgy house-red.
Walk back. Spa.
Saturday 18 April 2009
8.30 breakfast again. The breakfast room is lovely and the host is friendly but respectful of our privacy.
The host recommends checking out the local op shops and gives us a map with the closest ones and their opening hours.
Op shops in the morning (Church of Christ, DOV, 3 Legged Chair, Vinnies, Salvos and Outlook). We don't find much, but I did find some place mats with 1880s sketches of Melbourne on them. Katie was more impressed than I, liking that they were actually useful.
From the op-shops to Moorooduc Antiques and Old Wares. We spend a few hours there.
Back to the Packing House for lunch again, then we look around there for a short while.
Back to Mornington Shed again, Katie wanted to check something out she saw yesterday. She's looking for shoes and a handbag for the wedding tomorrow.
Back to the room. In the morning we had tried to book the Japanese place for dinner tonight but they call back and say they're booked out.
Drive to town for Noodle Box dinner (terrible), then buy a bootle of red (much nicer than the Thai place's house red) at Choice and sit on balcony back at B&B to enjoy it.
Sunday 19 April 2009
8.30 breakfast. Yum.
Our friend's wedding day is today. They're getting married at Morning Star Estate. We had actually considered staying there but decided to leave their rooms for wedding guests.
We drive to the venue to check the location. It's just up the road a few minutes. Drive further down to the beach. Lovely view of the city from there.
Drive back to Mornington. Walk up and down Main Street. Nothing really open on a Sunday so early. Around 11 the shopkeeps start arriving looking tired. I buy a magazine at the newsagent and we sit down for lunch.
Around 12:30 we head back to the room to get ready. We leave about 2.30pm.
The wedding is awesome, conducted in a wire chapel in the massive rose garden looking out over the water. The sun is in our eyes so we see mostly silhouettes. A Channel 9 helicopters floats overhead. The weather was very kind, almost hot after the last few cold days.
We mingle in the garden with food and drinks, then eventually into the hall for a massive eight course dinner. The speeches are everything you hope for at a wedding (love, embarrassment, magic). We leave close to midnight.
Monday 20 April 2009
It's our first wedding anniversary. We exchange gifts.
8.30 breakfast. Pack the car (it takes a while with all the stuff I bought). Check out.
We drive to Tyabb then down the west side of Peninsula to Flinders and stop at an op-shop and have a brief look around.
We drive back home via the C777 then freeway.
