Shira Nui 2007  #

In what has become a tradition we headed to Shira Nui last night for omakase to celebrate our (7th) anniversary.

We stopped after only six servings, saving space for desert, Katie having crepe with black sesame ice cream while I had black sesame crème brûlée.

For once I paid enough attention to what I was eating to remember what I liked. The tuna steak and pan friend salmon were both amazing, covered in spices ("no soy-sauce!") with a dab of wasabi. The salted dori was lovely and the lightly grilled almost raw beef was a rare treat. One I believe was sword fish (a bit fishy for my liking) and I've forgotten the other (some "kind of shell fish"), again a bit fishy.

After we stopped and had dessert we kept an eye on what was coming. Following us was prawns, then oysters then something that might have been squid. It could go on all night.

I drank a Japanese "malt beer" from a can that reminded me of Sapporo followed by Melon Calpis. Katie drank white wine. Last time I was there I was sure they made their own calpis but this time I noticed the cans in the fridge.

It wasn't as expensive as last time, due largely to only having six omakase dishes each. When we left the couple next to us were up to eleven.

Next time I think we'll sit at a table and order specific sushi dishes.

Despite being a Thursday the place was packed, the bar was full of people enjoying omakase and the tables full of couples and families enjoying sushi plates. The Age Good Food Guide certificates from '07 and '06 hung proudly behind the sushi chefs. I suspect they have a big pile of the previous years out the back somewhere.

Go.
